Ecological Vanlife in Greece: Leave No Trace Survival Guide
The freedom of vanlife is based on nature. In Greece, the lack of infrastructure makes environmental protection a personal responsibility. The 4 minimalist rules for responsible travel:
- Liquid Management: Black & Grey
Black Water (Toilet): They are emptied exclusively in campsites, private Camper Stops, or domestic sewage systems. They contain chemicals and pathogens that destroy the environment. Grey Water (Sink/Shower): We eliminate conventional soaps. We use only plain water or 100% plant-based, biodegradable products so as not to burden the soil. Emergency Evacuation: If there is no infrastructure, grey water (only without chemicals/fats) is discharged onto dry ground with soil that acts as a natural filter, far away from the sea, springs, and settlements.
- Leave No Trace
Trash: We collect everything. Organic residues (peels, food) do not decompose easily in summer and attract rodents. Alteration: We do not move stones and wood. We leave the landscape intact. Wildlife: We observe animals from a distance without intervening.
- Plastic Reduction
No Single-Use: We replace plastics with stainless steel or bamboo utensils. The Spray Hack: A spray bottle with water and a minimal amount of organic dish soap. You spray, wipe with a cloth, and save liters of water. Natural Protection: We prefer citronella and essential oils instead of chemical mosquito coils and sprays.
- Fire & Safety
Complete Ban: Due to the enormous fire risk in Greece, we forget about ground-level stoves. Cooking: We use exclusively gas stoves (small gas canister) at a fixed point. It is the only safe solution.
5. Outdoor Toilet
Bury natural human waste exclusively in a hole 15–20 cm deep, dug at least 60 meters away from water sources, beaches, and trails.
Cover the spot completely with the excavated soil, packing it down well and placing natural materials like leaves or rocks on top to prevent animals from digging it up.
